This was an extremely difficult phase to complete - the Aeroshuttle and bridge / sensor painting I can handle, but this was a bit much!

The primary difficulties were masking the phaser strips, then getting the color correct.  Masking was extremely difficult because of the splines made by the strips (no straight edges), making the pieces of mask <.25" in length the whole way up and around the strips.  If anybody knows how to do this better, I'm all ears!  This process for the underside alone took over three hours.

Tom Sasser said he liked to "add a little brown" to his phaser strips, and I tried to darken them as well.  I ended up mixing Tan with Afrika Dunkelgrau about 5/4.  A little chaos got thrown in when I mixed the final solution in the airbrush paint container and realized the pipette wasn't clean, introducing light grey and dunkelblau!  The first coat was orange, so I slapped some black in there until it was dark enough.

The final color is really quite radical, and I think would take more ability than I posses to duplicate.  I think, however, it's technically correct... ;)

The next step is to sharpen the lines a bit (the mask still wasn't perfect in many places) and correct any other problems on the hull.  Then, it's on to step 5.
