A coworker showed me this app – which can’t be found in the app store – and since he consistently comes across and tries pretty neat stuff I thought I’d give it a try too, and I’m sure glad I did.
Blokada is an app available from blokada.org as well as F-Droid that doesn’t require root, yet is able to intercept advertisement and malware requests. It does this by establishing a VPN connection to itself, then filtering requests based on DNS whitelists. Open source software, it also makes use of open lists of known advertisers, Command/Control addresses and other hostile addresses and these lists are updated every couple hours. This results in a hands-free, zero maintenance security app that is incredibly effective.
